Attention NY State residents:
Urge your assembly member and senator to vote against Bill AB 6920 / SB 6531, which propose to add “caste” as a protected category of discrimination. “Caste” is not a neutral term and there is no universal definition of caste. If passed into law, this bill would unfairly target people of South Asian descent or origin, subject them to additional scrutiny, leave them vulnerable to bullying in schools, and deprive them of their fundamental civil rights in the workplace or elsewhere.
Instead, the assembly and senate should consider adding “ancestry” as a category in New York’s Human Rights Law – something that is already reflected in Federal laws, is more neutral, and can provide protection to ALL regardless of their ethnicity or religious backgrounds.
Fill out the form and send an email to your lawmakers to take action today!
